Summer Reading List

Summer is coming to an end and I’m not nearly as glowy or well-read as I should be. It’s time to for a vacation. I’m heading to Toronto this week to visit family and pretend I don’t have a job. And I can’t wait for the flight. There’s nothing like being thousands of feet away from the real world with my gorgeous books. Escapism at its finest.

Hungry

Have I mentioned before that I have the same taste in books as my 16-year-old brother. Shameful, I know, but The Outsiders transcends age. So does the Hunger Games series. I’m about to seriously geekify myself: I. Love. The. Hunger. Games. And also: The first installment of the movie is opening March 23. Hell to the yeah!  If you haven’t read it, read it. Trust.

Oh and I really am hungry because starting today, I’m supporting The Husband in his endeavor to lose weight. This means lots of hard boiled eggs and salads. I desperately want a chocolate croissant.

Summer Reading List

I have two very expensive hobbies: wine drinking and book reading. I usually do both at the same time so the cost is double. Shockingly, the Husband is much more supportive of my reading than he is of my drinking, which is why he recently got me a Kindle. I still plan to buy hard copies of really good books I covet (because I like to hoard the written word), but the Kindle is definitely my go to for most titles.

Here are a few of my fav summer reads…some I’ve read multiple times (Summer Sisters), some are the best short stories written on earth (The Complete Fiction of Nella Larsen), and one literally changed my life (The Omnivore’s Dilemma). My recommendations are so much better than the New York Times so trust me and read these!

Summer Sisters, Judy Blume
The History of Love, Nicole Krauss
One Day, David Nicholls
The Complete Fiction of Nella Larsen
The Omnivore’s Dilemma, Michael Pollan
Blink, Malcolm Gladwell
Bossypants, Tina Fey
Jane Eyre, Charlotte Bronte
How Did You Get This Number, Sloane Crosley

Also, I just found the best website ever. It gives you book recommendations based on ones you like. Go check it.

The Books Aren’t Real

Good use of bookcase wallpaper no?
Designed by Florence Lopez via Côté Maison

It just occurred to me that I haven’t taken a photograph in 11 days, which is sabotaging the cost per use calcuations that made my new camera the most inexpensive gift I’ve ever received. I’ve been so overwhelmed at my day job lately that all I want to do during my free time is browse the Internet for other people’s photos and projects. I guess you could say I’m feeling uninspired at the moment.

The good news is that I’m announcing my first giveaway next week! Also, it’s almost the weekend and I’m thinking about maybe possibly indulging in a carbohydrate since I’ve been so good.

Happy Friday!

Cinderella

Most little girls dream about their wedding day. I used to fantasize about my library. I’m 27 and I’ve yet to see that fantasy fulfilled. Sure I have a couple of bookshelves with hundreds of paperbacks and some old college textbooks, but what I really desire is an adult library. I want floor to ceiling bookshelves lined with real hardback copies of “smart” books and maybe even one of those ladders that I can climp to get to something out of reach. Unfortunately, the space for a library in our home is non-existent, so I’ll have to wait a while longer for my Cinderella moment.
