Pulled BBQ “Chicken” Sandwich

I couldn’t watch TV on Monday without seeing some version of a barbecued leg, thigh or boob  — even Giada was smoking meat —  so I finally gave in and created my own pulled BBQ “chicken” sandwich in honor of being an American. It was smoky, spicy and totally satisfied my annual meat craving. We ate it with store-bought red potato and dill salad and locally brewed summertime beer.


1 (8 ounce) package of tempeh (poached)
1 red or green bell pepper, chopped
1 tsp vegetable oil
1 cup BBQ sauce of your choice (I like the fiery variety)
Sliced red onion
Sliced tomatoes
Jalapeno bagel
Pepper jack cheese

Heat oil in saucepan, saute bell pepper for five minutes. Crumble poached tempeh into saucepan. Add BBQ sauce and whatever other spice your heart desires. Serve on toasted jalapeno bagel with a slice of pepper jack cheese, onion and tomatoes.

  3. Wow, how did I not catch on that you are a Vegetarian? I’ve only had a tempeh Reuben sandwich and it was the bomb. I would totally try to make something with tempeh on my own (and see if the husband notices). Thanks for the tips!

    As the meat eater I am, I am usually very skeptical of meat-less BBQ recipes, but this looks delicious. That bread and beer also aren’t hurting the cause. Let me know what you do to doctor the chowder recipe. After you commented that I starting thinking of maybe a corn, chick pea, cauliflower chowder, with lots of cumin and a little spice!

    Are you a vegetarian? I was raised vegetarian but somewhere around college starting adding more and more to my diet.

    Tempeh has always been an “ick” thing for me… but I’m wondering if it’s just the way my mom makes it. These sound pretty darn good!

    • I am. The secret to tempeh is to poach it for a few minutes first to take out some of the bitterness and then season the hell out of it with goodies! I make a mean tempeh enchilada that tastes exactly like chicken I swear!
